Muslim Community Reference Group

The Australian government established the Muslim Community Reference Group in 2005.
The aim was to bring Muslim leaders together to discuss values, citizenship, radicalisation and so on... with the government.

A website was established on the Department of Immigration website but has now been removed. This site had all the information about the Reference Group, the members, meetings, and results...

The Australian government's Muslim Community Reference Group ended its one-year term in September 2006.

Final Report

The MCRG completed a final report and presented it to the government in September 2006.
(See opening letter to Andrew Robb from Dr Ameer Ali in report).

The Report shows the strategies that the government and Muslim communities are working on together...
It deals with marginalisation, radicalisation, employment, education and training, community engagement and leadership.

One of the 'projects' proposed by the federal government was $8 million to fund an 'Institute of Islamic Studies' to help with training imams. This project will be based at three universities - the University of Melbourne, the University of Western Sydney and Griffith University in Queensland. All of these universities currently have Islamic Studies departments which are run by Muslims.

The question is what sort of Islam will be taught!

A total of around $35 million was promised to help with a range of programs including employment and integration.

The National Action Plan refers to the input from the MCRG - click here.

A Diverse Australia

The MCRG was a project under the government scheme 'A Diverse Australia'.

A Diverse Australia
The Muslim Community Reference Group was part of "A Diverse Australia" run by the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (now the Department of Immigration and Citizenship)
Two features of the Diverse Australia program were: Strengthening Communities and Muslim Community Engagement (no longer online).
