STDs - Australian statistics

Both federal and state health departments monitor the rates of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in Australia and collate statistics.

This page gives links to the relevant department section - and the current data on STDs for federal and state governments.

Some authorities now called them sexually transmitted infections (STIs) instead of STDs!

Australia
The national monitoring of STDs is managed by the Communicable Disease Control section of the federal Department of Health and Ageing.

Communicable Diseases Intelligence journal
The data and statistics on STDs is published in the "Communicable Diseases Intelligence (CDI) journal, a quarterly publication of the Surveillance Branch, Office of Health Protection, Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing. CDI aims to disseminate information on the epidemiology and control of communicable disease in Australia."

States/Territories

Each State or Territory has separate legislation that governs the surveillance and reporting of infectious diseases. All the relevant legislation is available on the federal Department of Health and Ageing website - click here.

Victoria
The Victorian data on HIV and STDs is collated by the Health Department.

The Infectious Diseases epidemiology and surveillance unit publishes the data in annual and quarterly reports.

NSW Public Health Bulletin - From NCHECR website "The NSW Public Health Bulletin, published by the NSW Health Department, North Sydney, New South Wales, is produced up to 11 times a year and regularly includes counts of cases of newly diagnosed HIV infection and AIDS broken down by Area Health Service and reporting interval."
