Media Release20 April 2009 Say NO to alcohol, especially for teenagers and pregnant womenResearchers at the Murdoch Children's Research Institute recently announced 'We got it wrong!' "Now that researchers admit there is no safe level of teenage drinking, that must mean the 'WOWSERS' got it RIGHT!" said Jenny Stokes, Research Director of Christian group Salt Shakers. "We, and many others who have been called 'wowsers' (We Only Want Social Evils Removed), have said for a long time that one of those evils is alcohol. That has now been proven, especially for teenagers and pregnant women," she said. As a result of community concern about binge drinking by teenagers and alcohol-fueled violence, Salt Shakers calls on federal and state governments to:
"It is time good science and common sense prevailed. Our society has become soaked in alcohol and we are now seeing the cost of that throughout society," said Jenny Stokes. "Sadly, the Rudd government is reintroducing the higher tax on alco-pops while ignoring the fact that young people will simply turn to other alcoholic beverages." "It is time to increase the tax on ALL alcohol and that tax should be used to treat those now dependent on alcohol or caught up with the binge drinking craze sweeping our nation. Setting the right guidelines through legislation and education must become a priority rather than taxing one kind of alcoholic beverage," said Mrs Stokes. "If the government is serious about curbing binge drinking it should immediately move to ban ALL alcohol advertising and sports sponsorship," she said.
Previous governments eventually bit the bullet with smoking - it is now time to do so with alcohol. Yes, it will come at a cost but alcohol abuse has a much greater immediate and long term cost. Contact Jenny Stokes - Mobile: 0413 084 1465. Work: 03 9800 2855 |
